STORYLINE:
This week, the San Francisco Bay Area is experiencing the seasonal phenomenon of king tides, with particularly high waves crashing along the shoreline and causing dangerous conditions. 

King tides are the highest of the year and occur when the sun, moon and Earth align to create the strongest gravitation pull.

King tides can be a foot or more higher than average high tides and can be amplified by factors like storms or strong winds.

These events can cause coastal flooding, erosion, and dangerous conditions, and are often used to visualize the potential impacts of future sea-level rise.  

In Pacifica, California, the effects have been dramatic. 

Waves have been blasting over the pier, while the rising waters have made walking along the waterfront hazardous.

Pedestrians have been urged to stay clear of the coast, as the powerful surge of water has led to minor street flooding in the area.
