Why did the National Citizen Party (NCP), born from the 2024 student uprising that toppled Sheikh Hasina’s government, fail to contest the elections independently? It’s a question many are asking.
The student-led movement not only ended Hasina’s rule but forced several Awami League leaders into exile, marking what many called the world’s largest Gen Z revolution. With public frustration over decades of two-party dominance, hopes were high that the NCP would reshape Bangladesh’s political future. Some student leaders assumed key roles in the interim government, promising transformative change.
Yet expectations soon faded. Analysts cite political inexperience, weak grassroots networks, and mounting governance challenges as key factors behind declining public trust. Struggling to consolidate support, the NCP formed an electoral alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami.
The partnership, however, exposed internal fractures—particularly over women’s representation. Of 30 NCP candidates, only two were women, while Jamaat fielded none. Several female members resigned, calling it unjust. Meanwhile, the BNP remains a formidable contender.
