The origins of golf are somewhat mysterious and debated, but it’s generally accepted that modern golf developed in Scotland during the Middle Ages. However, there are intriguing precursors to golf-like games in other places as well. For instance, an apocryphal record from 1297 mentions a Dutch game played with a stick and leather ball, where the goal was to hit the ball into a target several hundred yards away with the fewest strokes. Some scholars even argue that a similar game was played in 17th-century Netherlands, predating Scottish golf1.
In the Low Countries, a game called “colf” or “kolf” was played as early as the 13th century. It involved hitting a ball with a club, and in 1360, the council of Brussels banned it, imposing fines for playing. However, exceptions were made for playing “colf” outside city walls1.
Fast-forward to the 16th century, and we find a Flemish artist named Simon Bening illustrating a game in a book of hours that resembles modern golf. This association led to the book being called the “Golf Book.” In 1571, another book described a game called “Kolf,” played with a “bat” and “sach” (likely a ball) 1.
While Scotland is often credited as the birthplace of golf, these earlier glimpses into similar games hint at a more complex history. Regardless, golf’s popularity soared in the late 19th century, spreading across the United Kingdom, the British Empire, and eventually the United States1. So, whether you’re teeing off in St. Andrews or enjoying a round elsewhere, remember that golf’s roots stretch back through time, connecting players across centuries and continents. ⛳🏌️♂️🌎
