Never waste any of the friction that you're working so hard to create on letting the inside walls of the divot rub against the outside walls of the spindle's tip. All pressure and all friction should be directed to the very bottom of the divot. It's a huge waste of your energy to allow otherwise.
Because I've always clamped or pinned my fireboards down, I've rarely noticed the wasteful "rub". Apparently, I've just been powering through all that unusable friction, getting the ember, and wearing myself out in the process.
Since practicing this No-Hold Fireboard Technique, it's easy to see the inefficiency and error of that technique. LOL!
