The Hall of Constantine, the largest and most solemn of the Raphael Rooms in the Vatican Museums, has been at the centre of a long and complex restoration project that has shed new light on one of the most significant masterpieces of Renaissance art.
In this video, five authoritative voices — Barbara Jatta, Director of the Vatican Museums, Fabrizio Biferali, Curator of the Department of Fifteenth and Sixteenth Century Art, Fabio Morresi, Head of the Cabinet for Scientific Research, master restorer Fabio Piacentini and Francesca Persegati, former Head of the Painting and Wooden Materials Restoration Laboratory — recount the key stages of the restoration.
From the original techniques used by Raphael to the most surprising discoveries: hand-painted oil figures, surfaces hidden by nails and resins, and the use of 3D scanning, which today allows the monitoring and preservation of wall paintings.
