Building a new runway is a big project, it takes time to do it properly.
Before Melbourne Airport can start major works, we need to prepare the site - including removing around 5 million cubic metres of earth.
To safely break up some of the hardest underground rock, controlled blasting will be used. Small-scale blasting trials are planned for mid-2025 to test these methods ahead of main construction in 2026.
We've worked closely with regulators, safety experts and air traffic control to make sure the process is safe for everyone. There won't be any flames or smoke, but there may be some muffled sounds and minor surface movements.
