Tempe is a female pup aged about 10 days old, who was noticed by a school teacher at one of the 2 schools on either side of this road.
I went to check the pup just after the call, but because it was peak hour and there is a lot of traffic on this very narrow road, I knew that the energy company wasn't going to come quickly.
I checked every few hours when I was rescuing in that direction or kind of in that direction, awaiting the call from the energy company.
The whole thing got totally screwed up when another pair of rescues just happened to be passing and checked the dead mumbat and noticed the live baby. They called it in to the energy company who didn't realise it was the same rescue as the one I had called in, so with two calls (one for the primary school on one side of the road, and the other for the high school on other side of the road) life became more complicated.
I phoned and said that I was the rescuer, and to call me, but they assured me it they would call me.
They didn't - they called the other callers and said "you weren't there so we left it where we took it down.
It was between 2 schools and I was really worried about children in after school care who may have potentially had contact with the mum's body and the baby.
As it turned out, the schools were shut up tight, with no way of getting into the grounds, and no way to climb the 2.5 metre spiked fence.
I walked up and down the fence looking for a box with a batty in it, but couldn't see it from any angle. I phoned the other rescuers to ask if they had any more info from the energy company. I phoned the energy company to ask the operator to ask the line crew what they did with the baby. (that was 3 months ago and I have yet to get a reply from them).
Eventually I got the exact wording of the notification, which had me looking in the sword leafed grasses on the other side of the fence. I couldn't find a box anywhere and was getting panicky as dusk was about to fall.
Then in one of the clumpy grass plants I saw a dark shadow (no box), and the body of the mum with the baby was just thrown away on the other side of the fence.
I managed to get them out, and thank heavens baby Tempe was alive and uninjured; as you can imagine I was furious and really upset. There has been no resolution of this failure.
On the plus side, this baby went to Auntie Jack who has raised her to creche age; she'll be going to creche this weekend in Bello (Bellingen).
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).

Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
Here’s Jenny’s email.
