Deep Modernization, Imperialism and the European Enlightenment
Speaker: Arjun Appadurai
Chair: Rajeev Bhargava
Date: 21 January 2013
Venue: 29 Rajpur Road, Delhi 110054
Abstract: This lecture seeks to explain why, in the very period in which Europe was defining and exporting its ideas about equality, reason and liberty as primary universal values, it was also engaged in a wholesale effort to conquer, exploit and domesticate much of the rest of the world. The proposed answer lies in the internal contradictions of the Western trajectory of world-making.
