When you swipe or tap your credit card for that favorite cup of coffee or to book those dream vacation tickets, have you ever wondered about the invisible infrastructure that makes it all possible?
Behind every transaction lies a network, linking your card to your bank and the merchant's bank. In India, there are several prominent players in this ecosystem- Visa, Mastercard, RuPay, American Express, and Discover. Each network has its own unique features and benefits.
Before we delve into the specifics of each credit card network, let's first understand what a credit card network is.
A credit card network is essentially the infrastructure that enables transactions to occur between various parties involved in a credit card transaction. It serves as the intermediary between the cardholder, the merchant, and the issuing bank.
In simpler terms, when you make a purchase using your credit card, the credit card network facilitates the transfer of funds from your bank to the merchant's bank, ensuring a seamless transaction process.
Visa:
Visa is one of the most widely recognized and accepted credit card networks globally. While it doesn't issue cards itself, it facilitates electronic fund transfers and offers perks like concierge services and lounge access. Visa offers a range of credit cards, including Visa Classic, Gold, Platinum, Signature, and Infinite.
Mastercard:
Mastercard covers around 50% of the market, offering extensive acceptance worldwide. Similar to Visa, it acts as a payment processor between banks and retailers. Mastercard credit cards come with benefits like contactless payments, lounge access, and global experiences. Variants include Standard, Platinum, and World Mastercard.
RuPay:
RuPay is India's own card payment network, launched by NPCI. It facilitates electronic payments domestically and has partnered with Discover for international acceptance. RuPay credit cards offer various deals across shopping, travel, and more. Variants include RuPay Select, Platinum, and Classic.
American Express:
Unlike others, American Express is both a network and a card issuer. It offers credit cards directly to consumers and provides payment solutions to other banks. American Express cards come with benefits like lounge access, dining, and entertainment perks. Popular cards include Platinum Reserve, Membership Rewards, and Platinum Travel.
Discover:
Discover operates through partnerships like Diners Club International. In India, it collaborates with HDFC Bank. Discover-branded cards offer various benefits, and popular options include HDFC Bank Diners Club Premium, Black, Clubmiles, and Rewardz.
Now, here's an update for all credit card users in India. Starting October 1, 2023, customers have the flexibility to choose their preferred card network during the issuance process, thanks to a directive from the RBI. This move grants consumers more control over their financial choices, allowing them to select a network that aligns with their specific needs and preferences.
