The timber rattlesnake is an endangered species in New Jersey. It is also endangered, threatened or extirpated throughout most of its northeastern range. NJ Fish & Wildlife’s Endangered and Nongame Species Program (ENSP) actively researches and takes actions to protect this species. Thanks to the [TAG Woodlands Wildlife Refuge] (ENSP’s primary venomous snake rehabilitator for almost 10 years), three timber rattlesnakes rescued during winter construction activities were housed and cared for until the spring, when the ENSP could implant transmitters. The transmitters will allow staff to track the snakes using radiotelemetry to locate undocumented dens and develop conservation management strategies.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the NJ Endangered and Nongame Species Conservation Act, which established laws to protect and restore endangered and threatened wildlife in New Jersey. As a result of the legislation, NJDEP Fish & Wildlife established the Endangered and Nongame Species Program to carry out the work necessary to restore and maintain these species.
