The film Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960) is a classic Bollywood movie, directed by M. Sadiq and produced by Guru Dutt. The story is set in Lucknow's Muslim society, where three friends—Aslam (Guru Dutt), Nawab Pyare Miyan (Rehman), and Shaida (Johnny Walker)—fall in love with the same girl, Jameela (Waheeda Rehman). Misunderstandings and the purdah system create confusion.
Nawab first sees Jameela in the market and becomes mesmerized by her beauty, describing her as chand-like. However, his mother arranges her marriage to Aslam, thinking it benefits Nawab. Aslam unknowingly marries Jameela, and Nawab does not know his dream girl is now his friend's wife.
The plot features a love triangle with themes of friendship, sacrifice, and heartbreak. In the end, upon realization, Nawab commits suicide by swallowing a diamond so Aslam and Jameela can live happily.
This film is famous for its cultural richness and emotional depth, beautifully showing Lucknow's architecture and traditions.
Now, about the song "Chaudhvin Ka Chand Ho." This title track is dedicated by Aslam to his new wife Jameela in the film. It appears after the marriage, when Aslam returns from a poetry recital and sees her sleeping, moved by her ethereal beauty.
The song uses metaphors like zulfen as clouds, aankhen as wine goblets, and chehra as a lotus in a lake to praise her incomparable husn.
Its meaning is romantic admiration, but it fits the plot perfectly because Nawab also described Jameela as chaudhvin ka chand, creating irony. This highlights mistaken identities and the emotional conflict between dosti and ishq.
The song is sung by Mohammed Rafi, with lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni and music by Ravi. It was spontaneously composed. Rafi won the Filmfare Best Male Playback Singer award, and Badayuni won Best Lyricist. The film is mostly black and white, but the title song was shot in color for emphasis. Interestingly, the song has been sampled internationally, like in "MY G" by Ali The Son Of Abdul. It is considered one of the most complete Hindi romantic songs, with superb poetry and subtle melody.
For the reimagined version: We revised this classic with new verses like "Raat ki khamoshi mein bas tera khayal ho" and "Chehre ki raushni se subahen sanwar gayin," blending the original chorus with modern emotional longing and devotion. This version retains the 1960s ghazal vibe but adds a contemporary touch of tanhai and dua, making it more relatable for today's listeners. In Raag Pahadi with Rafi-style vocals, it gives a fresh feel—new breaths in the old world of husn-o-ishq. Ideal for those who want timeless romance with a twist.
