STORY LINE:
Iran's foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki expressed his hope on Saturday for negotiations at ambassador level scheduled between Iran and the US in Iraq next week.
The two sides are due to meet on 28 May 2007, when Iran's nuclear programme is likely to be discussed as well as the security situation in neighbouring Iraq.
Mottaki played down the possibility of any political message in Washington's decision to send nine aircraft carriers into the Persian Gulf.
"In our view," he told a news conference in Tehran," we regard this recent one only a military wargame just like the ones they have conducted in the region in the past."
He also said Iran "could be hopeful to continue the negotiations," on the nuclear issue if the US was change its policy and accept its "commitments in Iraq."
Mottaki said he also hoped for backing in the UN Security Council, after a report from Mohamed El Baradei, the International Atomic Energy Agency chief on the nuclear programme.
"We hope this clear report will be the basis for a correct judgment by 5+1 (the five permanent members of UN Security Council plus Germany) on the identity and orientation of Iran's nuclear activities," he said.
The briefing was called after Mottaki met Rohitha Bogollagama, Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister for talks in Tehran.
