Welcome to The Combat Chronicles! In this video, we dive into the world of Lethwei, one of the most ancient and fierce martial arts known to man and the most brutal combat sport. Known as the Art of Nine Limbs and Burmese Boxing, Lethwei is a combat sport that hails from Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. This video explores the rich history of Lethwei, tracing its roots back over a thousand years to the ancient Pyu Empire.
Lethwei was traditionally practiced as a means of self-defense and a way for warriors to train for battle. In ancient times, traditional Lethwei matches were held in sandpits rather than rings. Fighters honed their skills in strikes, headbutts, and clinching techniques. They were allowed to use punches, kicks, elbows, knees, and even headbutts, making Lethwei distinct from other martial arts. Matches were typically fought until one opponent was knocked out or could no longer continue, with no points system or judges. Fighters could even take a special two-minute timeout if knocked out, to be revived and continue fighting.
One legendary Lethwei fighter, Tun Tun Min, famously came back from a knockout to finish his opponent in one of his matches. Another fascinating aspect of traditional Lethwei is the lack of gloves. Fighters would wrap their hands in cloth or hemp, emphasizing the importance of conditioning and resilience.
In 1996, modern rules were incorporated into some Lethwei events. These modern Lethwei rules eliminated the special two-minute timeout and introduced judges to score fights, ensuring there would be a winner if a knockout wasn't achieved. The World Lethwei Championship (WLC) is a big proponent of these modern rules.
In 2001, Lethwei went international, attracting fighters from all over the world. One notable international fighter is Dave Leduc, the first non-Burmese fighter to win the Lethwei Openweight World Championship belt. Leduc obtained the belt by defeating the legendary Tun Tun Min and has since worked to bring Lethwei to a wider audience, becoming a strong advocate for the sport.
Today, Lethwei stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of martial arts. It's a sport that respects tradition while embracing the future, bringing together fighters and fans from all corners of the globe.
