The Bongo is one of Africa’s most striking and elusive antelopes, known for its vivid coat, spiraled horns, and rare mountain subspecies found only in Kenya.
The Mountain Bongo, a critically endangered antelope, is being actively conserved near Nanyuki, Kenya, especially at the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy.
The Mountain Bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus isaaci) is one of the rarest antelope species in the world, native only to Kenya’s montane forests. Nanyuki, located near Mount Kenya, plays a central role in efforts to save this majestic animal
🦌 Conservation Highlights in Nanyuki
• Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy (MKWC) near Nanyuki is the heart of the Mountain Bongo restoration program. It houses breeding and rewilding initiatives aimed at reversing the species’ decline.
• Less than 100 Mountain Bongos remain in the wild, primarily due to habitat loss, poaching, and disease.
• In a major milestone, five Bongos were released into the Mawingu Mountain Bongo Sanctuary near Nanyuki in 2022, marking a hopeful step toward rewilding.
• Repatriation efforts have brought Bongos from North American zoos back to Kenya. In 2025, 17 Bongos were returned to form a founder population at sanctuaries in Meru County, close to Nanyuki.
*🌿 Why Nanyuki Matters
Nanyuki’s proximity to Mount Kenya and its forest ecosystems makes it ideal for Bongo conservation.
The region’s sanctuaries offer protected environments where Bongos can breed and eventually be reintroduced into the wild.
