Three of the most basic and at the same time most difficult to get right jumps: glissade, assemblé, and jeté.
Rules:
• glissade travels sideways, the same leg remains in front (there are exceptions)
• assemblé is jumped on the spot (does not travel), the leg from the back closes in front (there are exceptions)
• jeté is like an assemblé but lands on one leg with the other leg pointed in the back (in cou-de-pied). There are also exceptions.
The sequence of each of these jumps is: 1) brush (with the back foot), 2) jump (from the front foot). Never omit the brushing, especially if it gets faster or you are going to be in deep trouble.
There are big differences in how to do assemblé/jeté in different schools. In order to be (or to become) light and fast, I prefer to start jumping before I finish the brushing to a full tendu/ extended leg, at about 3/4 of the extension. But in the end, it depends on the school you train in or the style you have to perform.
