The "As Slow As Possible" (ASLSP) live performance is a unique and ongoing musical event that began on September 5, 2001, and is expected to last for 639 years. The performance features a composition by the avant-garde composer John Cage, titled "Organ²/ASLSP," and it is being performed on a specially designed organ in the town of Halberstadt, Germany.
The concept behind this performance is to stretch the piece's duration to its extreme limits, creating an experience that challenges our perception of time and music. Instead of following the traditional structure of a musical piece with specific tempos and durations, ASLSP is intended to be played as slowly as possible.
The Halberstadt performance was organized by the John Cage Organ Foundation and takes place at the Burchardi Church. The decision to make the performance last 639 years is not arbitrary; it is based on calculations derived from the piece's original score. The performance began with a rest lasting over a year, and the first sound was played on February 5, 2003.
Since the piece is played so slowly, the organ requires custom modifications to withstand the lengthy performance. Additionally, shifts in temperature and humidity can affect the sound and pitch, so the organ must be carefully maintained to preserve the integrity of the music.
The performance has gained worldwide attention and attracts visitors from all over the globe who come to witness the rare and remarkable event.
