In 1947, Necco (The New England Confectionery Co.) produced this short film to celebrate its centennial. This film provides a dazzling view of 20th century candy manufacturing, showing how 1,200 workers produced over 18 million Necco Wafers every day while also producing hundreds of other types of confections. An enormous machine called “The Mogul” pumped out millions of peppermint patty centers. Two huge mixing kettles blended 1,000 pounds of chocolate at a time. Rails at the loading dock brought in boxcars with tanks holding 20,000 gallons of corn syrup. Vast cold storage vaults held tons of coconut, nuts, chocolate, molasses, and fruit. The facilities also included huge packing and shipping areas, a laboratory for developing new products, an engineering department for ensuring cleanliness and efficiency, a cafeteria that could serve 600 workers at a time, and an on-site hospital.
