On 14 December 1971, during the Indo-Pak War, six Pakistani F-86 Sabre jets attacked Srinagar Air Base. Standing against them was a 26-year-old Indian Air Force pilot, Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, flying a much smaller Folland Gnat. Outnumbered and outgunned, he engaged the enemy alone in a fierce air battle over Kashmir.
What followed was one of the bravest dogfights in Indian military history. How did one young pilot change the course of that attack and become the only IAF officer to receive the Param Vir Chakra?
