Dr. Suarez-Almazor is a rheumatologist and clinical epidemiologist with a long-standing career in comparative effectiveness and outcomes research. She is the Barnts Familiy Distinguished Professor at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Her clinical areas of practice are rheumatology and clinical immunology, primarily in cancer patients and survivors. She is interested in comparative effectiveness research, and specifically in the development and treatment of comorbidities and adverse events in patients with cancer. In the past few years she has developed a research interest in immune-related adverse events (irAEs) in patients with cancer receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI). She has participated in consensus panels developing clinical guidelines for the management of these adverse events, published by the American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC). Dr. Suarez-Almazor has been a Principal Investigator in several studies funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and various foundations. She has mentored over 50 trainees and junior faculty, many on career awards, and received the first Distinguished Clinical Faculty Mentoring Award at MD Anderson, and the University of Texas Regents Outstanding Award in Teaching for my mentoring of junior faculty. She is the Director of CERTaIN (Comparative Effectiveness Research Training and Instruction), a program funded by NCI to provide methodological training, including the use of large databases for outcomes research.
