The US State Department has announced an indefinite suspension of immigrant visa processing for nationals from 75 countries, effective January 21, 2026, as part of the Trump administration’s intensified crackdown on legal immigration to prevent applicants likely to become a public charge on American welfare systems. This measure targets countries including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Russia, Iran, Somalia, Nigeria, Brazil, Thailand, and Yemen, among others spanning Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe, while sparing tourist, business, and temporary visas. The pause allows for limited exceptions after rigorous vetting but remains in place until a reassessment of screening procedures is completed.
