The History of Eger Castle
Eger Castle, located in northern Hungary, is a historic fortress that has played a central role in the country’s history. Its origins date back to the early 13th century, and over the centuries, it has witnessed pivotal events that shaped Hungary’s national identity.

Early History
The first castle in Eger was constructed after the Mongol invasion of Hungary in 1241–1242. Recognizing the need for stronger fortifications, King Béla IV ordered the building of stone castles across the kingdom. Eger Castle was built atop a hill overlooking the town of Eger, which had been an important episcopal center since the founding of Hungary by King Stephen I in 1000 AD.

Initially, the castle served as a stronghold to protect the region and its Christian religious institutions. Its strategic location made it a key defensive point against invasions.

The Siege of 1552
Eger Castle is most famous for its heroic defense during the Ottoman invasion in 1552. At that time, the Ottoman Empire was expanding into Europe, and Eger was a critical stronghold in the path of the invaders.

A massive Ottoman army of approximately 40,000–50,000 soldiers, led by Pasha Kara Ahmed and Pasha Ali, laid siege to the castle. Eger's defenders, numbering only about 2,000 soldiers and civilians, were led by Captain István Dobó. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the defenders used innovative tactics, strong fortifications, and extraordinary bravery to repel the invaders.

The defenders' courage became legendary, with stories of women joining the fight by pouring boiling water and oil on attackers and hurling rocks from the walls. After 39 days of fierce fighting, the Ottoman forces abandoned the siege, marking a significant victory for Hungary and Europe against Ottoman expansion.
