This video was not easy for me to make, but I believe it is important for other divers, especially solo female travellers, to see what can happen underwater and to understand what is and is not appropriate behaviour from a scuba instructor.
While completing my PADI Open Water certification in Hurghada, Egypt, I later discovered that my Insta360 camera captured footage of my instructor touching parts of my body underwater in ways that were not necessary for diving instruction.
As divers know, instructors sometimes need to guide students underwater. However, there are clear professional methods for doing this. Proper guidance is typically done by holding a diver’s tank, BCD strap, or upper arm. Touching a student’s legs or body the way shown in the footage is not part of standard instruction.
Instructor involved:
Haithem M. Abd El Hamied
PADI Instructor Number: 640019
After reviewing the footage, I reported the situation. I have already contacted the dive center directly and they are currently addressing the matter internally. The situation has also been reported to PADI Quality Management as well as the Chamber of Diving and Watersports (CDWS) in Egypt, and they are now in communication with me regarding the incident.
Beyond the inappropriate contact shown in the video, there were also several concerning issues during the course including major disorganization between staff members, poor communication about training materials, and equipment problems during dives. At one point my BCD was malfunctioning, causing uncontrolled buoyancy, which wasted air and interrupted training. This is something that should never happen during a certification course.
Another concern was that I asked beforehand if bringing my camera would be acceptable during the dive since it was my first day of the course. I was told it was fine, only to later learn that students in training are generally advised not to use cameras during certification dives, which raises additional concerns about the supervision and structure of the course.
After this experience, I dove with another dive center in Hurghada that showed me what professional training and diver safety should actually look like. The difference was honestly a complete 180.
The dive center is owned and operated by an instructor many people know as Batman. His team focuses heavily on diver safety, professionalism, and making sure students feel comfortable in the water, especially new divers.
One thing I also appreciated is that the center brings in female dive instructors on a seasonal basis, which can be especially reassuring for women who prefer training with another female instructor.
If you are planning to dive in Hurghada and want a professional and respectful dive environment, this is a team I personally feel comfortable recommending.

If you would like help getting in touch with them or setting up dives, feel free to reach out to me and I’ll happily point you in the right direction.
My goal with sharing this video is not to discourage anyone from diving. The ocean is incredible and diving can be life changing when done with the right professionals. But divers should always feel safe, respected, and properly guided, especially when learning.
If something feels wrong underwater, trust your instincts and speak up.
