Please Subscribe! Welcome to Roads and city streets. Today we explore up Walker Road in Windsor from Riverside Drive to Highway #3
Walker Road in Windsor, Ontario has a rich history tied to the city's industrial and urban development.
The Road is named after Hiram Walker, a prominent distillery baron who established the town of Walkerville in the 19th century east of Windsor. Walker deeded land to the Walkerville Land and Building Company in 1890, leading to the construction of many heritage buildings along Walker Road in 1893.
Walker Road became a hub for industries and businesses, servicing the Hiram Walker distillery, flour mill, and the burgeoning automotive sector. It was the birthplace of the Canadian auto industry, with the Ford Motor Company of Canada, Chrysler Canada and General Motors establishing plants on Walker-owned lands.
The road facilitated the growth of Walkerville, a "model town" designed by Hiram Walker with amenities like running water, paved streets, and streetcars. Walkerville eventually amalgamated with Windsor in 1935, despite residents' initial opposition.
