Returnal (2021) Longplay | One Cycle / Sidearm Only | PS5

Technically Selene dies during the mid-game cutscene but otherwise this is Returnal without the Return.

I didn't do any planning or preperation for this and hadn't played the game in a while so some encounters and especially Ixion/Hyperion got some surprise attacks in with behaviours I had totally forgotten. I think runs like this aren't fun if the threat of wiping doesn't show up every now and again though.

RNG gods were good to me with weapons on this run. The handgun/sidearm doesn't have the best reputation but with Homing Missile / Hit-Reload and Shrapnel it becomes one of the strongest weapons in the entire game. That combo maxed out would rival some dreadbound variants for viability later on in the Tower of Sisyphus.
Early on the sidearm is the highest DPS weapon because the only limit on the fire-rate is the speed of your finger. This falls off by midgame and from biome 4 onwards it starts landing trash traits that massively diminish its DPS potential even with the traits mentioned above.

By the end I had an unstoppable overpowered gun with Homing Missile III unlocked. In the interest of fairness I decided to swap this out for the crappy sidearm before Ophion, still melted her, but it would have been absurd with the original sidearm...
