The saxophonist Ravi Coltrane has the unenviable position of being the son of one of the most important and influential musicians in jazz history, himself a saxophonist: John Coltrane. That Ravi has found his own identity as an instrumentalist, composer and bandleader is testament to his undeniable talent. For this 2012 performance, Coltrane fronts a quartet of exceptional new jazz players, including pianist David Virelles, bassist Dezron Douglas and drummer Johnathan Blake. Ravi and his cohorts turn in a high powered set that fully displays both their virtuosic gifts as individual players and their cohesive unity as an ensemble. In addition to performing two of the leader's original tunes (and a composition by trumpeter Ralph Alessi, a frequent Coltrane collaborator), the quartet tips its hat to the jazz tradition by putting its own spin on Thelonious Monk's "Skippy" and "Countdown" by John Coltrane. *Steve Futterman*
