Back in 1877, the renowned woodblock print artist Toyohara Kunichika captured these universal experiences in his series titled "36 Modern Restaurants." This collection is like a time capsule, offering glimpses into the restaurant scene of ancient Edo (now Tokyo), over 140 years ago. I find this particularly fascinating, being a fan of Japanese cuisine myself.
Other famed woodblock artists like Hiroshige, Kuniyoshi, and Kunisada also produced restaurant-themed series. However, in my view, Kunichika's work stands out for its authentic depictions that vividly bring to life the dining culture of that era in Edo.
