Today's Training Video is on how to get your dog from overexcited to calm on command.
Some trainers will tell you that a dog should always remain calm and not get overly excited. I like to see dogs able to express their excitement but they have to learn that there is a time and a place for it. And that at any given time we may be asking them to stop and go from hyper to showing self restraint.
There likely will always be an unexpected real life situation where your dog gets all worked up so it's good to be prepared! The more practice your dog had at switching gears on command and listening to you even in a heightened state of arousal, the easier it will be to manage these real life scenarios.
I used Linc to demonstrate this exercise as this is new to him. The only prerequisite for this exercise is that your dog already understands the "Sit" command.
Linc got excited and jumpy but managed to perform the sit and hold it for a brief moment, which is all I'm looking for at this stage. Then we can expand the duration of the calm in between.
Have fun practicing :)
