John Wesley Powell was a geologist and the leader of a series of famous American expeditions intended to chart and document the natural features of the western United States from 1867-1872. In 1869, Powell led his most famous expedition, a 3-month journey down the raging Colorado River and through the Grand Canyon...the first time any group of people are documented to have accomplished this feat. The expedition was filled with adventure, tragedy, and intrigue that captured national attention. Later, John Wesley Powell would be appointed to be the second director of the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Lake Powell is named after him.
This centennial documentary, released by the Department of the Interior in 1969, reviews John W. Powell's geological observations of the Grand Canyon and the expedition's contributions to the geological sciences as well as some of the adventures the group experienced. He was also honored with a US postage stamp the same year. (Note: minor audio editing of the original film was conducted prior to releasing it on this channel.)
