Mvt 1: Allegro [Sonata-Form]
EXPOSITION
(0:00) Primary Theme (P1) in B♭ major, opening with Motif 1: a tender arpeggio in octaves.
(0:26) Transition Section, beginning in the subdominant (E♭ major) and moving to C.
(0:46) Secondary Theme (S1) in F major. Mozart surprisingly begins this theme exactly like P1, but now in the dominant. The new element here is a Motif consisting of repeated notes and a descending scale (M2).
(0:55) Counter-Theme 1 (S2).
(1:17) Counter-Theme 2 (S3).
(1:28) Coda.
DEVELOPMENT
(3:04) Episode 1: a repetition of the final chord in A♭7 calls back the transitional material, in order to modulate through various tonalities (D♭, B♭m, Fm, A♭, Gm, D).
(3:29) Episode 2: S1 in G major, still modulating (G, C, C7)
(3:48) Episode 3: M2 takes over, descending sequentially until it reaches an F7 chord.
RECAPITULATION
(4:07) P1.
(4:33) Modified Transition Section, ending in F.
(4:52) S1 + S2 + S3 in the tonic.
(5:24) Coda.
Mvt 2: Adagio [Ritornello Form]
(5:43) Theme A in the tonic (E♭ major). This melody is incredibly placid and profound. It's remarkable how Mozart can touch the soul with such childlike simplicity.
(8:18) Theme B in the relative (C minor). This sighful, pulsating material is so painstakingly beautiful... I have to admit it is my favorite section of the whole piece.
(10:30) Extended transition.
(10:54) Theme A.
(11:21) Theme C in the subdominant (A♭ major), more fluid and cantabile.
(12:55) Another extended transition.
(13:22) Theme A.
(13:51) Coda, resembling aspects of all the themes combined.
Mvt 3: Allegretto [Modified Rondo]
(14:47) Theme A in the tonic (B♭ major).
(15:26) Episode B, surprisingly still in B♭. Actually, it sounds more like a variation of the main theme instead of new contrasting material.
(16:36) Episode C, still appearing to be a variation of A, but now in the subdominant (E♭ major). The repeated notes and chromaticism make it sound more "fragmented".
(17:15) Transition.
(17:26) Theme A.
(17:39) Conclusive section, recalling the preceding episodes.
(18:03) Coda.
