How to Pronounce Certificate and Other Words that End in -ate:
Words with the -ate suffix have a pronunciation rule that's easy to learn. It depends on the part of speech. (Also, I spelled "consulate" wrong in the video. It should be "consulate," not "consolate.")
-- If it's a noun or adjective, "ate" is unstressed, so the vowel is not clear. Pronounce -ate with a reduced vowel like in "but" or "up."
-- If it's a verb, "ate" is stressed with secondary (medium) stress. Say the vowel clearly, like the number 8.
Can you think of other words that end in -ate? Are they nouns/adjectives or verbs? Let me know in the comments below!
