Peter Finer presents the centrepiece of their TEFAF Maastricht 2019 stand - a wheel lock musket from the personal collection of Louis XIII, King of France and Navarre. The gun can be seen on exhibit at Stand 216.
This gun is the work of the celebrated designer and gunsmith Jean Henequin of Metz and was produced between 1620 - 1630. It was comissioned by Roger de Saint Lary de Termes, Duke of Bellegarde, Grand Ecuyer of the Kingdom of France, who later presented the gun as a gift to Louis XIII.
The duke was a member Louis XIII’s small very select inner circle of courtiers within the Royal Household and was consequently styled by the king as ‘my cousin’. His title "Grand Ecuyer" translates as Grand Squire or Grand Equerry of France and is approximately the British modern equivalent of Crown Equerry and Master of the Horse.
The date of the presentation of the gun to the king is unknown, the low inventory number [29] being no chronological indicator of its date of entry into the king’s personal collection.
Louis XIII "The Just" (King of France from 1610 - 1643 was a keen sportsman and collector of fine arms and militaria. As Dauphin, Crown Prince of France, the king possessed his first gun at the age of 3 and by the age of 14 had accumulated a collection of over 40 arms, earning him the title "Louis l'Arquebusier" (loosely - "Louis the Gunner"). He has otherwise been famously been portrayed as the king in The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas.
