Have you ever felt stuck? Not lost exactly, but not where you want to be either. Living in the space between where you started and where you hoped you would be by now. Between the diagnosis and the remission. Between the layoff and the new job. Between the prayer and the answer. Between walking away from God and finally finding your way back. That in-between space has a name. It is called wandering. And it turns out, it is far more purposeful than it feels.
In Week 6 of the Old Testament Challenge, we follow the Israelites on a journey that should have taken 11 days and ended up taking 39 years. After a year at Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments and building the Tabernacle, Israel is finally ready to head to the Promised Land. The GPS says 11 days. God says otherwise. Instead of taking the direct route, God leads them on what Scripture calls "the roundabout way" through the wilderness. Not because He lost the map. But because He had work to do inside of them before He could bring them into what He had promised them.
This message explores one of the most honest and relatable seasons in all of Scripture. God is not a fan of the direct route. He was not then, and He is not now. And if you have ever found yourself on an unexpected detour in life, wondering why God seems to be leading you the wrong direction, this message is for you.
God took Israel into the desert to detox. After more than 400 years in Egypt, surrounded by false gods and idol worship, the people needed time to recalibrate spiritually. God was more concerned with who they were becoming than how quickly they arrived. That same principle applies to every season of waiting, uncertainty, and wilderness in your life. God is doing a work inside you that cannot be rushed, and He is not in a hurry even when you are.
But here is where the story takes a painful and painfully familiar turn. Instead of responding to the desert with trust and gratitude, the Israelites respond with whining. Constant, relentless, toxic complaining. They look back at their years of slavery in Egypt and somehow remember it as a fondue party. They forget the plagues. They forget the Red Sea. They forget the manna. All they can see is what they do not have. And that ingratitude spreads like an infection through the entire community.
This message draws a line that cuts straight to the heart: whining is the opposite of worshiping. Worship is giving God glory for who He is and what He has done. Whining is ignoring who God is and overlooking everything He has done. And the two cannot coexist. When we zero in on what we lack, we lose sight of the magnitude of what God has already given.
The wilderness is not a mistake. It is not a detour away from God's plan. It is often the very place where God does His deepest work. Abraham waited decades for the son he was promised. Joseph went from a dream to a pit to a prison before he ever saw a palace. Moses spent 40 years in the desert before God called him to the burning bush. The roundabout way is not a sign that God has forgotten you. It is often the clearest sign that He is preparing you.
If you are in a season of wandering right now, this message offers something better than a quick fix or an easy answer. It offers perspective. God has gone to extraordinary lengths to love you. He sent His Son to walk this earth, die on a cross, and rise from the grave so that you would never have to wander alone. And even when the pillar of cloud seems to be leading you somewhere that makes no sense, you can trust the One who is holding it.
The wilderness has an end. The wandering is not the destination. And the God who led Israel through the desert is the same God who is walking through yours.
