Snapping hip syndrome can be either intra- or extra-articular. Extra-articular snapping can be further classified into lateral and medial subtypes. Lateral snapping is related to the sudden movement of the fascia lata tensor over the greater trochanter of the femur. Dynamic ultrasound evaluation is useful to demonstrate snapping structures during provocative manoeuvers.
