For over 30 years, Jenny Saville has explored the body – especially the female body – through portraiture and the nude. Her works confront us as viewers and as a society, asking: How do we perceive the body in a world shaped by ideals and visual culture?

The title GAZE refers to the layered concept of looking – the gaze of the subject, the gaze of the viewer, and the cultural lens through which we interpret the human form today.

With JENNY SAVILLE. GAZE, the ALBERTINA MUSEUM launches a new series of solo exhibitions dedicated to contemporary female artists. General Director Ralph Gleis explains why Jenny Saville was chosen to begin this new chapter – one of the most important figurative painters of our time.

Seit über 30 Jahren setzt sich Jenny Saville intensiv mit Körperlichkeit auseinander: mit Akt, Porträt, Blick und Identität. Ihre Werke fordern uns heraus – als Betrachter:innen, als Gesellschaft.
In ihren monumentalen Bildern thematisiert sie den Körper jenseits idealisierter Darstellungen – fragmentiert, kraftvoll, roh und zugleich sensibel.

Der Titel GAZE verweist auf den Blick: den Blick der Porträtierten, den Blick der Betrachtenden und die Frage, wie wir Körper heute sehen und verstehen.

Mit JENNY SAVILLE. GAZE startet die ALBERTINA eine neue Reihe monografischer Ausstellungen zu Künstlerinnen. Generaldirektor Ralph Gleis erklärt, warum gerade Jenny Saville den Auftakt bildet – eine der bedeutendsten figurativen Malerinnen unserer Zeit.
