Hey everyone, welcome back to my vlog! Today, I'm super excited to share with you the incredible inauguration of the new permanent building of the Calcutta High Court Circuit Bench right here in Jalpaiguri. This is such a big deal for our region!
The event was graced by some of the most respected figures in India's judiciary and government. The Chief Justice of India, Hon'ble Justice Surya Kant, led the proceedings, along with Hon'ble Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, Justice Sujoy Paul, other Supreme Court judges like Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, former Supreme Court judges, and many more eminent judicial personalities. From the state side, our Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, inaugurated and addressed the gathering, joined by Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, State Law Minister Moloy Ghatak, Advocate General Kishore Datta, and local leaders including Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb.
The new building is impressive—built on a sprawling 40-acre plot by the state government at a cost of over Rs 500 crore. It features a beautiful 5-storey court complex resembling the iconic Calcutta High Court building, with six courtrooms (expandable to more benches), residential complexes including bungalows for judges (even one for the High Court Chief Justice), a 400-seat auditorium, and even a swimming pool! It's designed to make justice more accessible—no more traveling 600 km to Kolkata for High Court matters for people from Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and soon more districts.
The atmosphere was electric with pride and hope. CM Mamata Banerjee spoke passionately about unity, saying there should be no casteism or religionism in the judiciary, and urged everyone to work together for the country. She also appealed to the CJI and judges to protect the Constitution, democracy, judiciary, and the nation's borders from any disaster, while highlighting concerns over media trials and investigative agencies.
CJI Surya Kant appreciated the vision behind this bench, noting how it creates better access to justice and saves people from long journeys. Union Minister Meghwal emphasized the Centre's commitment to modernizing the judiciary through technology and infrastructure, like the e-Courts project.
This isn't just a building—it's a game-changer for timely justice in North Bengal. The circuit bench has been running since 2019, but now with this permanent home, it will handle more cases efficiently and expand its reach.
