Relax – Frankie Goes to Hollywood, performed on the Roland JD-Xi using the JDXi Editor
In this video I recreate and perform elements of the classic track “Relax” by Frankie Goes to Hollywood on the Roland JD-Xi. The JD-Xi’s combination of digital synth engines, drum programming, and vocoder-style effects makes it a surprisingly capable machine for 80s synth-pop and dance timbres, and this track is the perfect showcase.
The parts in this performance were edited, layered, and controlled using the JDXi Editor, which provides full access to parameters that are difficult to reach from the front panel alone. This includes detailed control of partials, envelopes, drum kits, MIDI channel routing, and performance controls.
What you will hear in this video:
Punchy programmed drum machine groove inspired by the original production
Driving bass line using the JD-Xi digital synth engine
Bright, brassy synth stabs and pads characteristic of early-80s production
Real-time tweaking through the JDXi Editor interface
Automation and MIDI sequencing to keep everything locked in time
The goal here is not to make a perfect one-to-one remake, but to demonstrate how close you can get inside a single compact synth while exploring sound design techniques from classic synth-pop.
If you are a JD-Xi user, this video also shows:
how the editor accelerates patch design
how to combine multiple digital parts with drums
practical use of envelopes, filters, and modulation
why the JD-Xi still holds up as a modern mini-workstation
Feel free to ask questions about patches, routing, or setup in the comments.
