Ethanol, the form of alcohol found in beer, wine, and liquor, is a small amphipathic molecule that easily crosses cell membranes, including the blood-brain barrier. The liver bears the brunt of the damage from alcohol metabolism due to the generation of acetaldehyde, a highly toxic metabolic intermediate that that damages DNA and proteins. The liver responds to alcohol-induced damage and bacterial endotoxins by recruiting immune cells. Eventually hepatic stellate cells become activated, which begin laying down fibrous scar tissue, ultimately leading to cirrhosis.
