Britpop was a subgenre of Alternative Rock that originated in the United Kingdom. Britpop emerged from the British independent music scene of the early 1990s and was characterized by bands influenced by British guitar pop music of the 1960s and 1970s.
Several British Alternative Rock groups, such as Radiohead and Manic Street Preachers, began achieving critical and commercial success apart from the retro leaning Britpop scene. Likewise BritRock offered an even noisier alternative to this mainstream Britpop scene, with disparate-sounding newcomers who became the focus of Kerrang magazine.
Post-Britpop formed as a softer derivative form of Britpop that emerged in the late 1990s with groups such as Coldplay, Travis, Keane, and Snow Patrol. As a contrast to these softer sounds found in Post-Britpop, many UK bands continued using louder guitars in Alternative Rock after Britpop's demise and apart from NME's Indie Rock Revival Scene.
