The City of Johannesburg has announced that the cause of the deadly explosion last month was methane gas. The blast ripped apart a stretch of Lillian Ngoyi Street, formerly Bree Street, sending taxis, vehicles and pedestrians flying. One person was killed and 48 were injured. The City of Johannesburg says it will cost an estimated R178-million to repair the damage. City Manager Floyd Brink says the upgrading of the tunnels and infrastructure in the CBD will be conducted according to current international standards to avoid future incidents of the same nature.
