The Church of Saint-Jacques de Dieppe is a Roman Catholic church located in Dieppe, in the French department of Seine-Maritime in the Normandy region.
The church is dedicated to Saint James.
The church (12thto 16th century) is in the Flamboyant and Renaissance styles: begun in the 12th century, the church of Saint-Jacques was erected as a parish in 1282 by Guillaume de Flavacourt, archbishop of Rouen. The north and south transepts date back to the second half of the twelfth century. The choir, the nave, and the side aisles date from the thirteenth century, except for the vaults and the triforium of the nave which dates from the fourteenth century. It was also in the fourteenth century that the large portal was built. In the fifteenth century, the tower and the chapels on either side of the large nave of the choir were erected, except for two of them which were part of the original plan of the church[1]. Inside, the Chapel of the Treasury is decorated with a frieze known as "the savages" which reveals the various nations discovered by Dieppe navigators and sailors. At the request of Jehan Ango, patron of the church in the sixteenth century, the artist depicted different scenes from the life of the natives: a procession of festivals and dances, warlike episodes, which many archaeologists and scholars came to observe. Victor Hugo also came to see these real stone lacework on September 8, 1837[1].
The building was classified as a historical monument by the list of 1840[2].
Lucien Lefort, departmental architect, was involved in a restoration operation (before 1916).
In January 2015, following the collapse of the dome's framework, the campanile was removed for restoration[3],[4].
On the night of November 6 to 7, 2017, eight paintings were stolen. These were due to Anselma (Alejandrina Gessler y Lacroix), Jean-Guillaume Drouet, Auguste Jugelet, Augusta Lebaron-Desves and Armand Mélicourt-Lefebvre.
