Note: The Catchment Management Authority (CMA) referred to in this video has evolved into what is now known as the Hunter Local Land Services as of January 2014.
This documentary showcases the progress that has been achieved by the Kooragang Wetland Rehabilitation Project towards regional natural resource management (NRM) outcomes.
The Kooragang Wetland Rehabilitation Project (KWRP), based on Ash Island, Hexham (near Newcastle) was initiated in 1993 to compensate for the loss of fish, shorebird and other wildlife habitat caused by 200 years of draining, filling and clearing in the Hunter River Estuary.
Completed in 2008, the Australian Government's Performance Story Report evaluated the progress that has been achieved by KWRP.
This evaluation found that KWRP has contributed to the conservation and rehabilitation of the estuarine landscape, native vegetation and key bird and other wildlife species. It has also contributed to regional biodiversity resource outcomes, providing an extension to adjacent Ramsar wetlands and to sustainable natural resource use and community outcomes.
This documentary was filmed to provide a visual representation of what KWRP has achieved and captures the essence of this successful environmental project and the significant changes that have been effected on the landscape.
