India's New Jewel: Navi Mumbai Airport to Ease Mumbai’s Air Congestion

Expected to open for commercial operations by December, this Rs 19,650-crore Greenfield project promises to transform air travel in one of India’s busiest aviation hubs. Spread across 1,160 hectares, the futuristic airport is designed to ease the massive load on Mumbai’s existing international airport and enhance passenger capacity across the region.

For the Adani Group, this project marks a major milestone — becoming the eighth airport under its operation after Mumbai, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Guwahati, Thiruvananthapuram, and Mangaluru. The company plans to invest nearly Rs 1 lakh crore in the aviation sector over the next five years, as its seven existing airports handled nearly 10 crore passengers and 11 lakh tonnes of cargo last fiscal year.

Meanwhile, India’s airport privatization drive continues to grow. Airports in Delhi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Goa, and Cochin are already privately managed, and the government plans to bring 11 more airports — including Varanasi, Amritsar, and Bhubaneswar — under the Public-Private Partnership model soon. The Navi Mumbai Airport is more than just a new terminal — it’s a symbol of India’s aviation ambitions taking flight.
