Narrowboat Diaries Autumn 2025 | Episode 7: Fradley Junction & Folk Night At The 'Mucky Duck'!

If you already know us from our YouTube channel 'Roaming The Cotswolds', you’re in for a brand new journey! This Autumn, we’re swapping rolling Cotswolds hills for winding canals and setting off on an unforgettable narrowboat adventure across Britain's historic canal network. If you are a new viewer to the channel thankyou for finding us and welcome aboard.

At the start of October 2025 we hired a narrowboat starting at Anderton Marina in the north of England undertaking a one way move south exploring 5 different canals to reach Gayton marina in Northamptonshire, a total distance of 126 miles with 88 locks! To add to the challenge we needed to overcome restrictions on the waterways with lock closures due to low water levels. As we began our 2 week journey the Trent and Mersey like many canals was closed after Middlewich forcing us to take a even longer route using the Middlewich branch and the Shropshire Union canals although there were rumours the Canal and River Trust were about to change all that. Basically we had no idea if we could follow our quickest route or have to go even faster via detours.

Thursday October 9th 2025
In Episode Seven we leave our idyllic mooring at Bishton and spend our last day on the Trent & Mersey heading to Fradley Junction where the Coventry Canal meets the Trent and Mersey. On our route we cruise past Rugeley and Handsacre and enjoy more glorious countryside and a few locks before arriving at Fradley. We turn right onto the Coventry Canal and moor up very close to The Sawn Inn Pub known to many boaters as The Mucky Duck. We visit the pub for a meal and find out its folk music night which makes for a brilliant evening. We are almost halfway on our journey now from Anderton Marina to Gayton Marina and looking forward to cruising new waters.
