I don’t promote physical entertainment shops on this channel, but was so fascinated by the book I had to come by and explore what’s changed in Yoshiwara since the book was written over 100 years ago. Link to the book - https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/69328

Not going to link to Kadoebi which is the shop I mention a couple times but you can search by yourself (maybe even on the train like a starved salaryman) to see what I mean by the industry is still thriving.

Overall as I continually mention I think there is much more freedom for workers in the physical entertainment side of things than before but don’t actively engage in the services. I would recommend you stay accountable to yourself rather than just taking a “When in Rome” approach to these sort of morally questionable shops. I do admit to promoting and somewhat glorifying Nightlife (drinking / non explicit companionship aside from VVIPs) as a way to experience interesting Japanese service and design.
