On the latest episode of the Blue Green's World podcast, I had the pleasure of visiting with Art X Love at their stunning new venture, the Forever Changes Gallery, located right in the heart of downtown Akron, Ohio. This episode dives deep into the vibrant art scene, history, culture, and future of Akron, connecting viewers with inspiring stories, local initiatives, and community spirit that make the city unique.
My guests, Allyse Love and Mac Love, are passionate about their business, art, and Akron’s evolution. They shared their journey of moving the gallery back to Akron from Bath, expressing a heartfelt connection and a commitment to revitalizing its cultural landscape. Moving from a quieter suburb to the bustling downtown, they’re now at the forefront of Akron’s artistic renaissance.
A significant part of our conversation focused on the Akron Stories project a storytelling initiative that highlights local history and personalities through interviews. We also discussed the iconic Rubber Worker Statue, a testament to Akron’s industrial legacy, commemorated with dedicated bricks around its base, serving as a lasting tribute to the hardworking men and women of the rubber industry. These bricks tell personal stories and provide a tangible link between past and present.
They discussed the Rubber Worker documentary film, which aims to shed light on the history, struggles, and resilience of those laborers, ensuring their stories are remembered for generations to come. Additionally, we touched on the Deaf Club, and historic icons like Rosie the Riveter, symbolizing female empowerment in industrial America.
Their building, the historic Chemstress Courtyard Building, provides an inspiring backdrop for the gallery. Once a tannery with leather goods, and later housing legal services, RKO Theater, the building is steeped in Akron’s diverse industrial history. Allyse and Mac shared memories of riding the building's original elevator and exploring its historic spaces, adding layers of character to their current creative endeavors.
The Forever Changes Gallery actively works to promote local artist. Art X Love have worked on over 200 murals by more than 400 Northeast Ohio artists. We chatted about the importance of public art like the Akron Honey Mural, in making downtown and the local communities a more vibrant, welcoming place for residents and visitors alike.
Purchasing art off the gallery walls was another topic—highlighting how locals and visitors can buy meaningful piece of Akron’s artistic landscape to take home, supporting local artists and enriching their personal collections. The gallery isn’t just about display; it’s a place for interaction, inspiration, and community engagement.
Looking ahead, we discussed what Akron truly needs—more investment in neighborhoods. Akron has a walkable downtown, and initiatives to bolster cultural tourism. Lock 3, a central hub that recently underwent a facelift, was mentioned as a prime example of revitalization that fosters community gatherings and events. We explored future proposals for the Innerbelt area, envisioning it as a vibrant, accessible corridor that connects neighborhoods and supports local businesses.
Culture and community were key themes. We talked about Akron’s Beer and AA culture, noting the rise of craft breweries and the importance of sober social spaces. The idea of introducing mocktail menus in bars/restaurants aims to cater to younger generations increasingly choosing non-alcoholic options, reflecting shifting social norms.
The conversation also emphasized the importance of a robust downtown—one that attracts young creatives, entrepreneurs, and families—through investment and thoughtful urban planning. We explored Akron’s myths versus reality—challenging stereotypes about the city while celebrating its hidden gems and vibrant arts scene.
I encouraged listeners to plan a trip to Akron: start with an eat a local meal, hike its scenic trails, explore the art galleries and murals, and catch an event at Lock 3, baseball game at 7 17 Credit Union Park or a show at the Akron Civic Theatre. Downtown Akron is a walking-friendly treasure, full of stories, art, and a community eager to share its heritage and future. Plan a trip to visit
