Brandy made history after receiving the 1st autologous islet cell transplant in the State of Louisiana. Because the cells are hers, she doesn’t need immunosuppression therapy and is able to make her own insulin even without having a pancreas.
Key points:
• Brandy had not been offered other choices other than to have her pancreas surgically removed - after being given a high probability for pancreatic cancer. If she wouldn’t have advocated for herself, and found me for a 2nd opinion, she would have been fully dependent on insulin as in the same cases of people living with Autoimmune Type 1 diabetes.
• Clinical trials are available for referral and funded. There are no guarantees, but they’re a chance at health outcomes otherwise unachievable. This is how we shape the future of medicine.
• islet cell transplants are NOT just for people that don’t have fully functioning islet cells. The foundational concept and need for this procedure is evident in people living with diabetes or at risk for it, as was in Brandy’s case.
I am grateful for the opportunity to practice Diabetology. And thank you to @UChicago and the entire medical staff involved in her care. Mostly, thank you Brandy for being brave enough to share your story. It will take all of us TOGETHER to end Diabetes.
