In this video: Film Camera: Nikon FE with the Nikon Lens Series E 50mm 1.8
Film: Kodak Portra 160

35mm film photography is where I started; film was the only game in town when I was a younger photographer. Then there was digital, which didn't look promising at first. But as dSLRs got better, film photography started to take a back seat. 35mm and medium format film stuck around even through camera manufacturers weren't interested in making film cameras as much.

People started coming back to film after the love affair with DSLRs started to wear off. Even younger photographers, looking for something more tactile, more real, are getting into film (35mm, medium format, instant). I don't think this is a fad. I think the craft of photography is about choice of medium, now more than ever. Wet plate, to film, to digital... it's about recording light.

But it's also about the feel of the tools and the response you get from the subject (in portraiture) based on the tools you're using. I love the feeling I get from a 35mm camera; the manual winding of the film, the manual focus, the click of the shutter. Shooting with film is a slower process. It's more deliberate and considered.
