Thelonious Monk-inspired original Christmas song "One Christmas."

“One Christmas” REMIX. This is a new song I wrote and produced YESTERDAY. [Dec. 21, 2019] I had the shell of the tune years ago, inspired by Thelonius Monk Christmas songs, but never got it over the finish line, so I set myself a deadline of yesterday and got it done. Done as in compositionally done, but I was up crazy late, mixing in headphones, and the mix sucked. Soooo… I’m counting the several hours I just spent tweaking the eq/mix/compression as a new post. Plus, there’s the whole value of A-B-ing stuff and process transparency…

It’s on the melancholy side, but that’s the way it is for some of us. I’m not sure where this comes from in my psyche, but I’d guess there’s some Jungian thread running through these songs of “spiritual fracture” and lamenting a lost piece of myself, abandoned somewhere in the chasm between childhood and adolescence. Or maybe it’s just a bit of dark indulgence in a Monk-ish vein. Hmmmm…
