The major part of Bangladesh lies in the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna Delta. It is Asia's largest and the world’s most populated delta that is widely recognized as highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, particularly sea-level rise and changes in runoff, as well as being subject to stresses imposed by human modification of catchment and delta plain land use for the development projects onshore areas.
The industrial chemical loads of Dhaka and Chittagong and Khulna have a profound impact on the Bay of Bengal biodiversity has been estimated to in excess of 135 million tons per year.
These heavily farmed environments and their populations are increasingly vulnerable to coastal floods, wetland and mangrove loss, shoreline retreat, and loss of infrastructure.
Around 35 million people, representing 29% of the population, live in the coastal zone. Each year the coastal people are flooded due to storm surges alone. Resilient, sustained social and economic development in the delta requires the capability to cope with sea level rise, salinization of soil and water, storms, and floods compounded by climate change.
Ocean Times BD works on the principle that sustainable development is possible only with the active cooperation of those most affected by policies. Our reports and commentary seek to involve both experts and policymakers at the highest levels of government, as well as to showcase perspectives from the people who live in the coastal area.
