When U.S. Marines braced for a massive Banzai charge on Guadalcanal, they didn’t rely on tanks or heavy armor. Instead, they turned a so-called useless weapon into something far deadlier.
The 37mm M-3 anti-tank gun was a laughingstock. Its armor-piercing rounds failed in Europe, infantry mocked it as a “Pea Shooter,” and officers nearly abandoned the 900-pound burden on the beach. It was the wrong weapon for the wrong war—or so everyone thought.
Then came the human wave attacks.
Ignoring doctrine and manuals, Marine gun crews made a desperate choice. They stripped off the heavy steel shields in a deadly “suicide configuration” for faster aiming and loaded forbidden M-2 canister rounds—essentially giant shotgun shells packed with steel balls. One pull of the trigger unleashed a wall of flying steel, transforming the failed anti-tank gun into a terrifying jungle broom.
But it came at a cost. The exposed crews had to stand their ground against thousands of charging enemies, firing until the barrels ran dry.
In this video, we uncover:
How the “suicide configuration” turned a discarded weapon into a battlefield legend
How a single canister shot could erase an entire squad in seconds
Sergeant Mitchell Paige’s Medal of Honor stand when the guns fell silent
They called it a “Pea Shooter”—until it stopped an entire assault.
